Burned everything? Here’s how to get rid of the smell

It only takes a few tricks to eliminate the signs of a distraction: find out how to eliminate the smell of burning in a few simple steps.

It’s good to cook. But sometimes it happens that something goes wrong. A distraction, an unsuitable tool, inaccurate cooking instructions, and here’s the disaster: we burned everything . What bitterness when it happens! Not just because we regret throwing away the food and the time it took to get to that point. Sometimes we may have accidentally ruined the pot or pan as well. Surely the house will no longer smell like it used to, quite the contrary. The smell of burning is really unpleasant and also persistent . It can even be accompanied by a milky smoke. How do you take it off? What are the tricks to eliminate all traces of our trouble in the kitchen?

When the smell comes from the pots

First, open all the windows to ventilate the room. If the other parts of the house have not been contaminated, quickly close the doors of the other rooms to preserve their scent. To speed things up you can also turn on the hood at maximum power. Within 15-20 minutes you can be free to breathe and ready to cook something new, perhaps with more attention.

In the meantime you have to remove the evidence of the crime and then the corpse : throw away the charred food . Better to get rid of the garbage bag too , as soon as possible, throwing it in the waste bin. Of course, all this as soon as the burnt preparation is cold. In the meantime, you can put the body of the crime on the  outside. Now wash the pot or pan well. If it remains encrusted, wait to throw everything away. Cover the bottom with the water and vinegarin the ratio 2: 1. Bring to a boil and wait for a few pieces of burnt to come off. At this point, turn off the heat and add a teaspoon of baking soda. Once the effervescence is over, wipe the base with a non-abrasive sponge and remove the last traces of encrustation.

If the smell of burning should be particularly strong and pungent, you can adopt one last strategy, the coup de grace. Fill a large pot halfway with water. Bring to a boil and pour a lemon cut into small pieces or a glass of white wine vinegar. Simmer for five minutes. Turn off the stove and let the vapors cover the stench of burning. It could take up to half an hour so be patient. If the acrid smell of vinegar bothers you, open the windows during this phase. Do you feel the burn on you as if your clothes have soaked too? No fear. You can leave them outside overnight or sprinkle them with baking soda. Let it act for about twenty minutes. Brush the garment and then wash it normally in the washing machine or by hand.

When the smell comes from the oven

As we said, if we have burned food in a pan or pot we can wash it with a few tricks. What if we combined the pie in the oven? Maybe it seems that the smell has passed but then, at the next ignition, there is a risk that it will reappear . So let’s see how to clean it properly and eliminate the stench 100%.

First, remove any charred crumbs with a vacuum cleaner with a crevice nozzle or a mini vacuum cleaner. Then wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth and a spray of oven degreaser. Otherwise, use a 1: 1 solution of water and salt . With a cloth wipe it on the encrusted part and let it act for a few minutes. Finally, clean with a damp cloth. It does not work? Sprinkle some vinegar on the most resistant burnt and then sprinkle with baking soda. Turn on the oven and keep it at medium temperature for 15 minutes. Turn off and remove the baking soda (and the encrustation) with a damp cloth. The degreaser or the water and vinegar solution are also ideal for removing the burnt smell from the microwave ovenand avoid that the acrid scents can affect our recipes .
